Ayurvedic Medicines: Questions to Ask at Your Consultation

If Ayurvedic medicines are recommended during your consultation, you should understand how they fit into your care plan. Asking questions is welcome. A clear prescription and a shared understanding help you follow the doctor’s instructions correctly.

Start with your complete medicine list

Tell the doctor about prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, herbal preparations and supplements. Include what you use occasionally as well as what you take every day. Also mention allergies, previous reactions, pregnancy, breastfeeding and planned surgery.

Herbal products can interact with medicines. “Natural” does not mean a product is suitable for every person. Do not stop an existing prescription or add a new preparation without discussing it with the appropriate treating clinician.

Ask these questions before you leave

  • What is each prescribed medicine intended for?
  • What dose should I take, at what time and for how long?
  • Are there instructions about food or other medicines?
  • What should I do if I miss a dose or notice an unwanted effect?
  • When should I contact the clinic or return for review?
  • Where should I obtain the prescribed formulation, and what will it cost?

Confirm the exact product and instructions

Different preparations can have similar names. Follow the prescription and confirm an unclear label, dose or substitution with the clinic. Do not assume that a product recommended to a friend is appropriate for you.

Medicine availability, dispensing arrangements and costs should be confirmed separately. An appointment request is not an order for medicines, and the need for a prescription is determined during the consultation.

Use follow-up to review the plan

Keep a note of what you have taken and any concerns. At follow-up, bring the prescription and any new reports. If you experience a significant or unexpected problem, seek appropriate medical advice rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
