What is Psoriasis?


It is skin problem in which the skin cell multiplies 10 times the normal multiplication of the cell leading to the red patches with white scales as the outer cells are deprived of blood supply and soon becomes dead leading to the dry white patches. Commonly we can see the psoriatic patches appears on the scalp, behind the ears, elbows, lower back, knees but it can flare up to all parts in severe cases.


Symptoms- It varies from person to person, but common symptoms are as follows


White scales sheds from the affected part.
Red skin beneath those white patches.
Itching at the affected part.
Crack and bleeding areas.
Distorted nails.
Discoloration and pitting of the nails.
Pain & swelling of the joints in psoriatic arthritic cases.10-25% cases of psoriasis also suffers from arthritis.


What Causes Psoriasis


Exact cause is unknown but it is a combination of factors. Western system of medicine has a view that something wrong with the immune system causes inflammation and triggering new skin cells to multiply too quickly.


Psoriasis tends to run in families, but it may skip generations.


Physical exam.  It’s usually easy for your doctor to diagnose psoriasis, especially if you have plaques on areas such as your:
Scalp
Ears
Elbows
Knees
Belly button
Nails


Your doctor will give you a full physical exam and ask if people in your family have psoriasis.


Lab tests.  The doctor might do a biopsy -- remove a small piece of skin and test it to make sure you don’t have a skin infection. There’s no other test to confirm or rule out psoriasis.


Certain triggers may make your symptoms worse, including:


Cold, dry weather.  
Stress. 
Some medicines. These include some ”beta-blocker” drugs used to treat high blood
pressure and heart disease; lithium, a treatment for bipolar disorder; and pills taken to treat malaria
Infections.  There is a short list of infections including strep throat and tonsillitis that can trigger a special kind of psoriasis outbreak.
Skin Injury.  In some people, the tiniest cuts, bruises, and burns can cause an outbreak. Even tattoos and bug bites might trigger a new lesion. You can wear gloves or put on an extra layer of clothes to avoid a break in your skin.

Smoking
Body surface area:  How much of your body has psoriasis? To figure this out, keep in mind that generally, your hand is equal to 1%.


Severity:  Whats the average scaling, thickness, and redness of your lesions? The more you have, the more severe your condition is.


Quality of life (QOL):  How much does your psoriasis affect your daily life? Tools that measure this include questions about your condition, your skin, emotions, and relationships.


Psoriasis Index of Quality of Life (PSORIQoL):  This tool focuses on how psoriasis changes how you deal with the needs of daily life. Questions cover things like sleep, your social life, and emotions.
0 Psoriasis Life Stress Inventory (PLSI):  It a 15-item questionnaire that asks you how stressful various daily tasks are for you. Psoriasis Disability Index (PDI):  The PDI looks at how psoriasis affects your daily activities, including work, leisure time, and personal relationships.
